The Process

The couture process can be intimidating for those who aren’t used to having clothes made-to-measure. Which is, to be honest, most people nowadays. Whether it’s your first time having a dress made for a special occasion, or you have an annual event that requires making an unforgettable impression, Michel treats each client with care and approaches each piece with the highest degree of craftsmanship and technique.

His designs will fit your needs exactly, and with Michel’s guidance, it’s both fun and fulfilling to see something that’s unique to your style and your body transform from a sketch to reality.

Michel Antoine workshop

1. First Consultation

You and Michel will meet, either in-person at his atelier at 260 St. Patrick, or virtually. Not only will you explain your needs - whether you need a dress or a suit and what event you’re dressing for - Michel will get to know you. Your personal style, your inspirations, your likes and dislikes, all of which he takes into account when creating a design for each individual client.

You’ll also get to know Michel. Because fittings are intimate and physically close, it’s important consent to someone entering your personal space.

2. Design Proposal

Michel will create a design proposal based on the information from your first consultation. He will offer three to four options for you to consider, and as you discuss what you prefer, he will create a final proposal - perhaps a neckline from one design, and the hem length of another. Michel will take your measurements at this point. You’ll also discuss and choose materials.

3. First Fitting

Once you and Michel have settled on a design, he will create a muslin, which is the building block of any couture creation. The muslin - made out of the material called “muslin” - is a mockup of your final garment and is made up of the main pieces of the garment. At this point, there is not much detailing. When you come in for your first fitting, you will put on the muslin and issues with fit, proportion, and movement will become clear, and Michel will adjust the muslin accordingly.

4. Final Product

Using the one-of-a-kind design plan and the muslin, Michel will create the final product. Depending on the complexity of the piece and your timeline, it can take from one to three months to bring the design to life. You may need to come in for more than one “final” fitting, so that the piece fits perfectly.

It is a moment worth celebrating when your outfit is ready.

“My obsession is to make women beautiful. When you create with that in mind, things can’t go out of fashion.”
